Australia
Interesting Facts:
The 1972 government of Gough Whitlam, the first Labor government for 23 years, carried out sweeping reforms such as introducing universal health insurance and reforming the divorce laws. Whitlam's arrogant style soon alienated many voters, and after a series of ministeral scandals in 1975 the Senate for the first time used its constitutional powers to block the government's budget. When Whitlam refused to back down, the Governor-General, Sir John Kerr, dismissed him on 11 November. Despite the fury among Labor supporters (and most legal opinion) these actions caused, the conservative leader Malcolm Fraser won the subsequent elections and retained power until 1983, though the social reforms of Whitlam were retained and in some ways continued under Fraser. In 1983 Labor returned to power under the former trade union leader Bob Hawke, a much less confrontationist figure than Whitlam.
Australia has been continually inhabited for at least 50,000 years by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Eastern Australia was claimed by the British in 1770, and offically settled as a British colony on January 26, 1788. As the population grew and new areas were explored six self-governing Crown Colonies were established within Australia. On 1 January 1901 the colonies agreed to form a federation and the Commonwealth of Australia was established. Since federation Australia has had a stable democratic political system and it remains a Commonwealth Realm.
